 CHALLENGES WE FACE

St Teresa Community Centre School is an institution that serves very needy learners who come from poor families in Soweto Slum. With a population of 600+ pupils, 50% of the learners are from single parents many of whom are jobless or doing casual jobs that can barely enable the parents to finance school fees for their children. These children, if not taken care of, many will be school drop outs and fall prey to early childhood marriages, drug abuse which is rampant in the slum, child labor, prostitution and other social immorals which will terminate the future of an entire generation. St Teresa Community Centre saw this need in the society, and led by the Founder and Director Mr. Joshua, the institution was born, with an ultimate aim to provide a rescue centre and education for the needy children in the impoverished Soweto slum. The founders have for long been struggling to ensure that their dream materializes by involving the parents in raising minimal school fees. However, there is still a major setback in resouces supply as a result of the needy situation of majority of the parents. And as a result, the institution faces major challenges, and is inviting like-minded partners and organizations to come in and support them in touching souls and transforming the lives of these children and slum dwellers as a whole. Some of the major challenges are as follows:-

1. Lack of  playground for P.E. and extra-curriculum activities.

2. Lack of P.E. Kits, first Aid Kits and trainers for games.

3. Lack of text books and learning materials for the learners and teachers guides. The available text books are shared at a ratio of 1:6, meaning the learners can't study well.

4. Lack of IT facilities. No computers for offering computer lessons.

5. Insufficient staff. The available teachers are not enough considering the population of learners. Again, teachers for special subjects such as French are expensive to hire and the school cannot afford.

6. There is a challenge in the structures. many classrooms are iron-sheets, temporary offices and no hall for meetings.

7. The school management has a feeding program that offers free food to the learners. This means more expenditure on resources that are rare.

8. Most of the learners are out of school on days when they fall sick. many parents being poor are unable to provide medication to the pupils.

9. Lack of school uniform. Many learners have to learn without school uniform.

10. Water supply is a challenge in this slum. A borehole will serve this school and even the community at large.

11. Motivation for the teachers. Majority of the academic staff here work as a way of giving back to the community. The salary is very minimal and motivation is required for the teachers.
